When twenty-five-year-old Ifemelu leaves Nigeria for America to study, she’s sure of two things: she’ll never have to return home, and she’ll always be black. She quickly realizes that America is not the promised land, and struggles to make it in a new country where she doesn’t speak the language or have many of the resources she’s used to. Americanah is a book that asks what it means to be American and what it means to be black in America.
